Two laid-paper covered portfolios with cloth spines and mounted illustration on front. 17 x 13 1/4”. Photographs are mounted on heavy paper sheets, gathered with cord. 43 original silver tone photographs, approximately 8 x 10”, of the Montecito Estate, La Toscana; (20 of the house and 23 of the garden and grounds) each photo signed bellow on mount by Dapprich, with his professional “Photographer of Interesting People” sticker in each volume. One photo is missing, most have original protective glassine which has darkened over time. Some prints have been refastened with scotch tape (six of the house, nine of the garden), some have silvering to edges, but are generally in very nice condition. Magazine page with photo of library taped to last page of house portfolio. Portfolio’s show wear and ties are loose.


La Toscana was designed in 1927 by Santa Barbara architect, George Washington Smith for Kirk B. Johnson, a founder and the president of First National Bank of Beverly Hills. The grounds were designed by Los Angeles landscape architect, A.E. Hanson. It has had several owners over the years including auto racing’s Andy Granatelli. Currently it is named “Sotto Il Monte“ and recently sold for over $32,000,000.
Fred R. Dapprich was a Los Angeles based photographer who specialized in architectural, advertising and portrait photography.
