Ap Catesby Jones, best known for his illegal seizure of Monterey in 1842, was tried for a variety offenses arising from command of naval forces off California coast during the Mexican War: Conversion of government funds for personal use, attempted fraud, scandalous conduct, the malicious prosecution of an officer under his command, and the execution of two seamen under his command prior to confirmation of the death sentences by the President.
