Santa Barbara: A Hand Job Press / Gas n' Go Publication /At Speed Press, 1992.

Softcover. Fine. Item #52905

12mo. 7 x 5.5". Two titles, two separate books. Both in wrappers titled "Twentysix Abandoned Gas Stations", but one contains Jesse Alexander's "Motor Racing Photographs."

"Twentysix Abandoned Gasoline Stations by Jeff Brouws is an exact replica of Ed Ruscha’s Twentysix Gasoline Stations, first published in 1962. Mimicking Ruscha’s format, design and type treatment, the 5½” x 7” book contains 26 black and white shots of abandoned gas stations. While the images selected bear no geographic relation to Ruscha’s original photos (it is not a re-photographic project), they do share an aesthetic sensibility in the way both artists employ a deadpan, neutral gaze." Motor Racing Photographs is a selection of 36 photographs taken by Alexander, limited to 3000 copies . Title page printed with the same typeface and design used for Brouws book and in this case with the same cover. A joke, a mistake, certainly an oddity possibly explained by the fact that Brouws was involved in the publication of them both in 1992. The Brouws book states that it is limited to 1000 copies, but is unnumbered. Both titles are in fine, unread condition, but they do not have glassine dust jackets. An interesting, unusual pair.
