Octavo. 344pp. Color frontispiece. Illustrated from b&w photographs and line drawings. True first (of which most were destroyed), with the color frontispiece that has copyright date on recto. This copy has the bookplate of artist, Herschel C. Logan, with a note below it indicating that it came from C.A Seward, who painted the frontispiece. Green cloth with pictorial stamping in black and red. Gilt lettering on spine has worn away, light rubbing to spine ends. Spotting to rear cover. Minor evidence of erased pencil notes on ffep. Rear hinge starting a bit and a few pages carelessly trimmed. Howes W706, Six Guns 2456.


Herschel C. Logan (1901-1987) His job at McCormick Armstrong printing company brought him to Wichita where he was influenced by Robert Aitchison and C. A. Seward. It was through Seward that Herschel became a prolific woodblock printer during the height of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Herschel’s subject matter was that of everyday scenes in rural Kansas, and he was the youngest founding member of the Prairie Print Makers.
